Make Your Own Makeup! Tips And Tricks To Save Your Skin And Your Money!

Make Your Own Makeup! Tips And Tricks To Save Your Skin And Your Money! – Makeup is something that girls love to play with. Even as five year olds, pretending to apply lipstick to our dolls and ourselves (and sometimes even the walls!) was just the beginning of what can become a life-long fascination.

Makeup is pretty and sparkly, and even though many women don’t need it to be beautiful, it makes us feel special, like we took a little bit longer in getting ourselves ready for the world by putting our best face forward, literally.

Most of us have at least a drawer full of makeup and beauty products, and some have entire cupboards full. Even if we only use the same three items every single day. We buy a lipstick and don’t like the shade. Or buy mascara that claims to give you the longest lashes ever, only to find out it really doesn’t. So back in the drawer they go. And since you can’t return most makeup items if you’ve used them, wasted money goes along with.

Makeup these days can be very expensive. But it can also be full of chemicals and ingredients that some people prefer not to use. If you have sensitive skin, certain products can cause irritation or even make pre-existing skin problems worse. While some products may prove to be far too difficult to try and attempt on your own, there are some that are easy and inexpensive at the same time.

One of the simplest things to make is lip gloss. You can find the ingredients at any health food shop or natural products department in larger retailers. All you need to do is melt ¼ cup of natural beeswax with 6 teaspoons of castor oil in a small saucepan. You can substitute jojoba oil or sunflower oil if you prefer. Mix in 5 or 6 drops of essential oils, such as peppermint or lemon, to add a hint of flavor. Pour into a jar and allow to cool before covering. Once you have tried this basic how-to, you may find yourself wanting to try making colored lip gloss, which you can do by adding small amount of pure beet juice until you reach the desired shade and depth.

Making other beauty products requires a few more ingredients, equipment and time. However, most of the products needed to make them are easier to find these days. And with the internet, you can easily source a multitude of different recipes, as well as tricks and tips from people who have already made their own makeup products that will help you figure out what you want to do. Have fun and experiment with different methods and ingredients and you may find that the thing that makes you feel the prettiest is something you made yourself!

Manolo Blahnik Shoes

Manolo Blahnik Shoes – It’s estimated that the average woman spends £527 on shoes in one year and it’s no wonder when fashion icons such as Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica-Parker) are shown fuelling their insatiable appetite for them.

Manolo Blahnik is a world-famous shoe designer who grew up on the Canary Islands after being born there in 1942. He studied politics and law in Geneva, moved to Paris and finally settled London where he set up his shoe design business in the 70’s without any formal shoe-making training. Blahnik began his career as a set designer in the UK, and upon seeing his sketches, fashion guru Diana Vreeland suggested that he should move onto designing shoes.

Within the fashion world Blahnik’s shoes have always been legendary, appearing on the feet of Yves Saint-Laurent, Calvin Klein and Christian Dior catwalk models (amongst many others).

But it wasn’t until they were mentioned in hit 80’s and 90’s television shows ‘The Simpsons’, ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ and ‘Sex and the City’ that almost every woman who gave a tinkle about fashion knew Manolo’s name.

Carrie Bradshaw is the main character in Darren Star’s ‘Sex and the City’. She is a column writer for a New York newspaper with a penchant for clothes, particularly shoes and more specifically Manolo Blahniks and Jimmy Choo’s.

Manolo’s shoes span a huge range of styles, colours and fabrics and his work has earned him a CBE (commander of the British Empire) and honorary doctorates amongst praises from a huge number of celebrities, fellow designers and fashion moguls.

Madonna once said that Blahnik’s shoes were ‘better than sex…and they last longer’ (which elicited a rather cutting response from the man himself). Yet despite all this praise and publicity, Manolo modestly maintains that his huge career was an ‘accident of life’.

Many fashion designers are famous for creating many different clothing garments, but Manolo Blahnik’s name is synonymous solely with footwear, each pair of which he designs, sketches and moulds the heels himself. His shoes are incredibly sexy, often stiletto heeled, ballet shoes, mules and sandals. Manolo has no inhibitions when it comes to designing and his shoes are in all colours and prints (animal and camouflage), with diamonds, feathers, buckles, beads. They usually sell for hundreds and even thousands of dollars and are on sale in boutiques in London, New York and Honk Kong.

In 1974 Blahnik appeared on the cover of British vogue, and was the first man to fill the role. Right up to the 21st century he continues to be in the public eye, being the very first shoe designer to have work displayed in a museum and with his most eclectic work photographed, bound and published in Eric Boman’s fashion photography hardback (pictured right).

Manolo Blahnik’s work has earned him the status of ‘household name’ and his shoes have even been nicknamed ‘Manolo’s’. The man himself said that he needed no formal training in shoemaking because he ‘has the best taste in the world’; and who are we to argue?

New Prep Style Pioneers

New Prep Style Pioneers – There is a old notion is that the essence of prep style is assimilation with the country club and yacht set, but thanks to new prep style pioneers we can breathe a little individuality into this uniquely American style. This style had a surge of popularity in the 1980’s but has since grown stale. Despite how you feel about preppy people socially, there is hardly a negative thing to be said about their sense of style.

For example Andre 3000 of the Atlanta, Georgia based group Outkast can often be found wearing prep style. Below André3000 is shown in a classically prep piece the sweater vest. If André3000 had chosen to wear khaki pants with his sweater vest he would be rocking prep style from head to toe but thankfully he chose to keep it a little street by switching it up and wearing jeans.

Kanye West and Pharell Williams also like to borrow from Prep style. They both have been wearing polo and lacoste on too many occasions to count. Many people refuse to acknowledge the fact that a lot of rapper dress preppy, the aforementioned entertainers simply embrace the style without stigma. Come to think of it, if you were to ask kanye he would say that he is responsible for the influx of prep style in hip hop today, but I digress.

Moving right along to another set of new prep style pioneers: the cast of Gossip Girl.

For those of you who don’t know, Gossip Girl is a popular CW teen drama about wildly rich and privately educated New York high society teens with a penchant for underage drinking and parties. I’m not sure what school they are attending but their uniforms are much more stylish than any prep academy I’ve seen.

Notice how they are all wearing headbands? They have all adapted their school uniforms to fit their personalities but the headband reminds us, their still preppy. It’s the little details in prep style that really make the difference such as the lack of ostentation jewelry and wild hair styles.

Maybe you think that this whole idea sounds too expensive. Don’t worry!? You can find plenty of the items you will need to put together a prep outfit at lower prices in thrift stores, department store clearance sections and Ebay. If you choose your clothes correctly, people won’t know how much you’ve saved unless you tell them. Fake it ‘till you make it right?

Let’s not forget prep style is not all about uniforms and old money label exclusivity anymore. Because we cannot rely on these same old money labels (i.e. Polo by Ralph Lauren, Lacoste) to switch up their design style, we instead can look forward to seeing our new prep style pioneers rock those designs in a whole new way

Nylon Makes Jewerly?

Nylon Makes Jewerly? – I’m not really sure what the inspiration for this whole Nylon jewelry collection was. If I had to take a stab at it I would say these are all objects I recognize from childhood except the deer head which would have just freaked me out as a child. There has to be a common thread in all of the pieces of this collection perhaps by the end of this article I will have figured out exactly what it is.

Dang that’s one mad deer! I guess I would be too if someone shot me and kept me around a reminder of their “strength”. I don’t like hunting or the practice of displaying the heads of the slain on the walls of ones house. This necklace puts lends a sense of humor back into the whole hunting scenario. This necklace is unisex at its best. It is ironic enough to appeal to women and masculine enough for the men. All hunting connotations aside I love this necklace.

Ice cream is normally a associated with words like cool and refreshing but this season that’s not the case., Ice cream is so hot right now. From ice cream cones to ice cream bars, this sweet inspiration is dripping all over the accessories world lately. Although I have never seen an ice cream bar with rainbow sprinkles, these are made from tiny glass beads. The idea of sprinkles is exciting but I think they would have been bettered suited on a donut or perhaps a cupcake.

Lego as a fashion statement, they said it could never be done. Legos are everywhere in the world of accessories right now. The most notable appearance would have to be the Lego belt buckles made by Marc Jacobs. I loved legos as a child and I love them still as an adult as a pendant on this necklace. The robot shape of this pendant makes it much more memorable in comparison to other Lego pieces, for example the Marc Jacobs belt buckles I was referring to just look like 4×6 bricks of Lego, kind of boring. If these two accessories got into a fight the robot would definitely win.

Mixtapes are long gone and so is the romance associated with them. It used to be that you would communicate your feelings to someone on a cassette tape filled with music that illustrated your love and or infatuation with them, however times have certainly changed. Cassette tapes are now obsolete and many would argue that romance has suffered the same fate. Lucky for us we can keep the idea and magic of the mixtape alive with this necklace. I’ve never heard the Nylon mix but I will just pretend it is full of slow jams and thoughtful raps dedicated solely to me.

I have bad news and good news. The bad news is I still don’t know what the central idea is for this collection. The good news  is I no longer care because my enthusiasm for Nylon jewelry as a whole has grown by leaps and bounds. I look forward to collections to come and hope they will be a little more cohesive. If they are not I will still probably like them anyway…..

Okay Baby Phat

Okay Baby Phat – Baby phat is one of those street wear labels that is known for its signature logo. The Baby Phat cat is on everything that is Baby Phat. Their logo is the core of almost all the designs that come out of Baby Phat. If the cat isn’t printed into a pattern for a shirt it is somewhere embroidered on the pockets or maybe nested within the metal embellishments.

Look at how pretty this shirt is! And you can barely even see the big gold Baby Phat cat embroidered on the side of this shirt. I love ruffles. I love them even more when they are this bright. The madras was a great choice of fabric for this shirt. As far as summer goes madras really captures the spirit of a luxurious summer. This shirt is so sexy and it doesn’t even show any cleavage, in fact it barely shows any skin at all.

See now this is where I get confused. On the website it says that this is a top. And here we see this “top” very clearly being worn as a dress. While I normally would see nothing wrong with a shirt that can function as a top or a dress this particular item made me raise an eye brow. My eye brow was raised due to the fact that if this woman even so much as leans forward you will see all of her goodies and then some. Sure that’s fine if that’s how you want to dress but with a brand like Baby Phat that has convinced themselves and their consumers that they are a “classy” luxury brand, I just don’t think they should encourage the possible embarrassment of their target market.

Do you recognize this face on this tank top? That’s right its Baby Phat founder Kimora Lee Simmons.

have her face printed all over. If there is one thing to be said of Kimora it is that she is very vain. On the bright side, I really like the novel use of gold print on this tank top. Really this is a cute idea, maybe I’m just hating because I want my face to be on money too.

I’m positive the Baby Phat cat is somewhere within the print of this shirt but I couldn’t say where. That alone is reason enough to love this shirt . Another reason would be, bright colors like hot pink and Teal mean you now get to wear some really eye catching accessories or even better in my book, black. Black bangles or maybe a shiny black belt would do the trick. I bet you didn’t even notice the peek-a-boo shoulder did you?

Oh Baby Phat what am I going to do with you? I want to love you because sometimes you dazzle me with shirts like that ruffled one from up top and then other times you miss out on details like the mismatched pattern on the blouse above. I’m keeping the faith, I believe in a few years Baby Phat may mature as a brand as its target market will eventually mature. Maybe that’s when I’ll start buying Baby Phat….

Party Party Party Dresses : Part Two

Party Party Party Dresses : Part Two – It’s Saturday and the party dresses are still jumpin’ and itchin’ to go out another night. We already know street wear has the graphics game on lock, so none of today’s dresses will be cartoony or kitschy in anyway. Today we will see street wear at its finest.

Oooooohweee! This is considered street wear? Well then street wear must be on the come up or BB Dakota is on the come up to be more specific. This dress is called the  “Boon”. Lurex isn’t utilized nearly as often as it should be. For those of you who forgot to attend or didn’t take textiles class, Lurex is what gives this dress its metallic sheen. The gold bubbles all over this dress will make people do a double take and when you put your hands in the hidden pockets, they’re all gonna stare. So just make sure you pose into it when you do.

The orange background of this fabric is perfect for summer, because it is one of the hottest colors for the summer and it will bring out the warmth in every skin tone tan or not.

Above is a lovely little number is by a brand called Soundgirl. This dress is aptly named “Belinda”. I wish I could have Belinda over to my house for a spot of tea and crumpets. Garden parties all over the world have been waiting for a dress like this to walk in. The ribbon and bow around your waist will make you feel like a present maybe even a surprise. There is just something so girly and exciting about this dress. I want it.

The Triple 5 Soul  “A380” isn’t overtly sexy or over embellished. It is simple, clean and chic. There are times when you want to go out  and look good but you don’t want to show off your assets, you just want to be cute and comfortable. This is the dress you wear when you have that attitude. While this look is more toned down it is still capable of being very sexy with the right shoes, hair and accessories. This is another good dress to wear with a statement shoe or maybe jewelry that is ordinarily too chunky or powerful .

Does this look like a best seller to you?  I just don’t see it but it is a best seller at some online retailers. This “Spank”  dress by  NYC Boutique is a little frumpy for me. Although I will admit I can see plenty of reason why this dress is still cute to so many women. Starting from the top the wide mouth peter pan color looks comfortable and it is not common at all.

Moving right along to the tuxedo-esque panel on the bodice of the dress, it is a fabulous way to break up all the vertical stripes in the fabric with horizontal stripes and silly ruffles. And lastly to the pockets and thigh yoke, I don’t know what it is about pockets but they seem to be popping up on a lot of dresses.

I can only guess that is because what women want and I say give the people what they want. Personally this dress reminds me of two Mcdonalds characters at once. The Hamburglar because of the thin convict stripes on the fabric and Grimace because of the lumpy gum drop silhouette.

Well I don’t know about you but I am ready to get up an go have fun. Not without picking out the perfect party dress first of course. Even if you normally just wear jeans and cute top to the club you really owe it to yourself to find out exactly why they call them party dresses.

Party Party Party Dress – Part One

Party Party Party Dress – Part One – It’s Friday!!! In honor of the weekend and the party feeling that consumes 80% every weekend I wanted to review some party dresses. Every dress in the following two segments will be from a different street wear label, I want to show the variety that street wear is beginning to offer. Street wear doesn’t just mean t-shirts and obnoxious logo repetition any more.

This little number is the “Lucy” made by  Rojas. I’ve never heard of Rojas before so perhaps in the future I will have to give them a full brand review so we can all get to know them a little better.  Lately I have been wanting more and more yellow in my wardrobe. This dress would be a perfect addition to said wardrobe. The triangles are a little 80’s but this dress is definitely going to get you a lot of compliments.

Is there any question about who made this dress? It’s pure Toki Doki duh. This dress makes me want to spin like the little records that are featured in the print. The neckline and empire waist are going to flatter a wide range of bust sizes so don’t worry if you don’t think you have the cleavage for this dress. The triangle cups make it look like anyone has the cleavage for this dress. Besides with all of the crazy things like pink hair tattooed ladies in the print, no one is going to notice your cleavage or lack there of anyway. This dress belongs at a barbeque and I say that because most people w ill be dressed down while you will be ever so casually dressed up and thusly stealing the show.

Here we have the “Anabelle” shirt dress  by Pa:nuu. I really have no clue about Pa:nuu, as in where they are from, how long the label has existed, and who is that pig? Regardless of who the pig is I am glad he is here on this dress.

Without the pig this dress would be mediocre at best but with our little oinker it is a winner. If you wear this dress I hope you don’t wear it with boots like this model did, it just makes her look shorter than she needs to be.

We have all heard of Stussy before but we may have never heard of the “Bangle” dress before. This dress is just great! Yea it is pretty simple but don’t you see how fun that is? We can wear virtually any accessories we want with this dress because of its simplicity.

This same principle means we could wear a statement shoe instead of just shoes to match the dress. If you don’t know what I mean by a statement shoe, I mean those pairs of shoes that we all have that are too ornate or out there basically shoes that take the attention away from the rest of your outfit. This dress is a great base for a lot of cute looks.

I’m so excited for this two part series! If you thought you liked this installment wait until you see what part two has in store for you.

Purple People Pleasers

Purple People Pleasers – Purple purple purple! It’s every where you look and I couldn’t be happier. Purple is the latest color to break the color code  by changing from complimentary  to neutral. That’s right you read me right, these purple purses will act as a neutral in the over all scheme of your ensemble.

Because of this purse Alexander Mcqueen and I can now be friends. Best friends if he really wants it that way… The way I feel about this plump purple wonder is hard to describe because if it was mine I would love it so dearly. If you wanted to you could fit all of your daily and maybe even over night needs into this bag.

The only concern I have for this bag is the fact that it is patent leather. While I’m sure it is of the highest quality of purple patent leathers available, that stuff is still liable to tear and or crack. With patent leathers you have to be weather conscious at all times, too much heat your bag may loose shape and too much cold will crack or split. I kid you not, a bitter cold day in Brooklyn, New York caused my favorite black patent leather bag to be laid to rest after incurring far too many tiny cracks to patch up. I’m still sad about it and its summer now!

Here we have the Bay bag from Chloe. I love the almost pre-worn leather this purse is made of. The quilting along the majority of the purse is really nice too. It makes me think this purse would actually be a great investment. The more stitching on a purse I see the more I think of  that particular purse’s added durability. While this may not be true because if remember what I learned in  good ol’ textiles class correctly  you really shouldn’t puncture leather any more that necessary. I think we are all fooled by this alleged misconception. Anyway this looks like a fantastic purse, just look at the way it stand up alone, you’ll never find patent leather that does that.

The Fendi “Spy bag” pictured above is a cult classic no matter what color it comes in. We are just fortunate that this season it is available in rich almost royal purple. The “Spy bag” is pretty infamous, its name has been mentioned  by the likes of Jay z in his verse on Beyonce’s  “Upgrade You” and Fat Joe on his hit “I won’t tell”.   This purse is a status symbol no matter what color it comes in.

Perhaps we are seeing so much purple because we are also seeing the use of bright yellow a lot more. While purple and yellow are complimentary to each other we do not need to limit ourselves to only this color combination.

The sooner you try  it yourself is the sooner you will find out that the right purple will go will anything. I suggest if you do buy a purple purse or any purple statement piece to make sure it is a true purple and not a lavender or plum. Be patient and selective and the purple purse you find will carry you all through summer and into the fall with ease.

Short Hem, Big Fun

Short Hem, Big Fun – Its hot outside and mini dresses are the perfect way to flaunt your legs this summer.

The ultra saturated corral color of this dress is bound to make you the center of attention. The Peter Pan collar and two button ruffle say this is an innocent dress but the length of the hem says otherwise. This mini dress comes with handy pockets on the side. Typically when pockets are added so obviously to a dress they often give a heavier feeling to the sides but in the case of this dress it is so short a little extra fabric doesn’t hurt the silhouette.

Mini dresses, like the maxi length dresses available are experiencing a revival of floral prints. I really like this punchy floral mini dress the color and design make me feel like someone just brought me a big glass full of Hawaiian punch and a fist full of flowers. How kind! The softly shirred empire waist and surplice neckline are flattering to virtually any bust and waist size.

Here we have another empire waisted mini in a sunny yellow and white oversized polka dot print. I see this dress walking down the beach with its slightly billowy skirt blowing in the breeze. The bow I’m not 100% convinced is actually necessary for this dress but it doesn’t look all that bad.

What is more perfect than the little black dress? The little black mini dress! Out of all the dresses within this segment, the little black mini dress truly has the most longevity. It will never go out of style because everyone knows the little black dress is a classic that every woman should have. Sure eventually it will be too cold to wear your little black mini dress and that will be the day you pull out any color, preferably a very bright color, of tights and a wrap for your shoulders and wear the little black mini dress anyway. The only thing I do not like about this dress is the belt loops look like they protrude from the dress. That just means they are going to get snagged or ripped off sooner or later.

When worn the hem of this mini, which is gathered in with elastic, will not have a traditional creased hem but a whimsical bubble instead. The bubble hem is a very popular among mini dresses. For those of you who can stand to add a little extra fluff to your backside this dress is a great look on you. For those of you who already have too much booty in their pants, you’re probably not going to like what this dress will do for your figure.

No matter what type of figure you have, if you have nice legs then you already know it and you know you should be wearing a mini dress this summer. C’mon ladies let your beautiful gams breathe in a minidress.

Sparkle Sparkle!

Sparkle Sparkle! – An influx of boring colors has made my eyes hungry for a little sparkle and shine. Thusly, Tarina Tarantino is back! Animal inspiration is on the rise again in jewelry specifically insects and marine life. I am not so picky I love just about any animal influence in my accessories except for flies, they creep me out.

Bows, beetles and a couple of tiny bows that is what this necklace is made of. In my opinion you really can’t go wrong when you pair black with silver, it always looks sleek. When I first saw Aladdin as a little girl I was captured by the idea of scarab beetle jewelry. Back then I was mystified by the idea that anyone would even want to wear anything resembling a bug. Later when I learned of the meaning of scarab’s I changed my tune.

Ooooh whose tooth is that? It doesn’t really matter what animal this tooth came from because they are too cute. Black and gold like black and silver always look outstanding together. In his case there is just enough gold to really compliment the black rhinestones on the black enamel teeth. Once again I like the tiny bows and I don’t think Tarina Tarantino can do any wrong with them.

Sparkle is a defining word for Tarina Tarantino’s work however I’m not so sure the extra white and pink rhinestones are helping this necklace. The problem with using rhinestones these days is the thin line between sparkle and bling. For those of you out there who don’t know yet bling as a word is no longer synonymous with big money and shine but rather the lower end of the spectrum, something that has peel able adhesive backing and came from the drug store counter. Unfortunately, I think this necklace qualifies as bling as a result of this it is my least favorite of all of Tarina Tarantino’s line of jewelry.

Trend forecasts say that marine inspiration is hot for summer of 2008. As far as I’m concerned I like these seahorse earrings all year round. These earrings come in a few different colors including white and black. I haven’t really seen too much sea life floating around at my local mall but the magazines keep saying the trend is coming. I for one am eager for sea inspired creations to trickle down already.

Dependant on the piece Tarantino’s work can look very expensive to very cheap. Toning it down isn’t really something Tarina believes in. I mean she has bright pink hair, she couldn’t tone it down if she tried. That is what makes her so memorable as a designer, her unrelenting devotion to all things that sparkle. Tarina Tarantino has come a long way from the little girl who used to make jewelry from fimo clay.
